FERPA

What is FERPA?

FERPA stands for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. The law protects the privacy of student education records, while at the same time providing students with access to their own records. It regulates how educational institutions may collect, maintain, and disseminate information about their students. FERPA was enacted by Congress in response to a concern that "educational agencies and institutions were not complying with state laws mandating disclosure of student records."
