iOS is an operating system for mobile devices that is based on the OSX (Operating System X) Unix kernel. iPhones and iPads use iOS, along with iPods. Apple designed iOS to be used in conjunction with its hardware ecosystem, which includes the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac computers. iOS applications are distributed through the App Store, which is curated by Apple. As of June 2017 there were over 2 million apps available in the App Store.
