What is Non-Profit?

Non-profit organizations exist to support a cause without generating revenue for shareholders. Though non-profits typically rely on donations and grants, they also generate revenue by providing services or selling products. Because of their status as non-for-profit entities, many non-profits qualify for significant tax breaks and other forms of government support. Non-profit organizations can take the form of charitable trusts, foundations, private associations, public charities that receive federal tax exemptions (typically 501(c)3), and various other classifications that are defined by state or federal laws.
